Instructions for defense - Dissertation/Thesis


PREPARATION OF THE DISSERTATION/THESIS:
The Dissertation and/or Thesis must be prepared in accordance with the Writing Guidelines for Dissertations and Theses of the PPGBV (click here).

 

DEFENSE SCHEDULING:

 

The advisor must send an e-mail to the PPGBV Coordination, with at least 15 (fifteen) days in advance of the date scheduled for the defense, the following Documents for scheduling the defense:

  1. Committee Appointment Form (Click here) signed by the supervisor indicating the full and alternate members with all the other information filled in.
  2. Academic transcripts of the graduate student;
  3. Clearance Declaration issued by the Academic Office;
  4. Curriculum vitae of the External Committee Member(with CPF information).

COMPOSITION OFDEFENSE COMMITTEE FOR DISSERTATION/THESIS:

               The composition of the committee will be evaluated by the PPGBV Coordinating Committee. The dissertation and/or thesis defense committee must be composed of:

MASTER’S:

Main Members:

  1. Advisor – Chair
  2. Two Internal Members – professors/PhD researchers affiliated with UENF and/or UVV
  3. One External Member – professor/PhD researcher affiliated with another Institution

Alternate Members (2):

  1. Internal Alternate – professor/PhD researcher affiliated with UENF and/or UVV
  2. External Alternate – professor/PhD researcher affiliated with another HEI 

DOCTORATE:

Main Members:

  1. Advisor – Chair
  2. Two internal members - professors/doctoral researchers linked to UENF and/or UVV
  3. External Member - professors/doctoral researchers linked to another HEI

 

Alternate Members (2):

  1. Internal Alternate - professors/doctoral researchers linked to UENF and/or UVV
  2. External Alternate - professors/doctoral researchers linked to another HEI

 

DEFENSE MINUTES SIGNATURE AND APPROVAL PAGE FOR DISSERTATION/THESIS

According to COLAC Resolution 033/2024, the signature of committee members on the defense minutes and approval page of the dissertation and/or thesis may be completed via electronic signature on the following platforms:

I - ICPEdu certificate, issued to members of the UENF university community with access to the Academic System;

II - Gov.BR electronic signature, issued by the Gov.BR Electronic Signature Portal.

ATTENTION: If electronic signature via Gov.BR or ICPEdu is not possible for a committee member, the committee chair will issue a statement using the SEI system.

 1- For the DEFENSE MINUTES, the committee chair must issue a statement in SEI with the following text:

"I declare that the defense minutes of (student’s name), level (master’s or doctorate), entitled (title of dissertation or thesis), was approved in the defense held on __/ __/_____ by the committee member(s) (mention full name of each member) unable to sign the document".

NOTE: This statement must be attached to the printed and/or digital defense minutes (Form 10)!

2 - For the APPROVAL PAGE of the final version of the dissertation or thesis, the committee chair must issue a statement in SEI with the following text:

I declare that the final version of the dissertation by (student’s name), level (master’s or doctorate), entitled (title of dissertation or thesis), was approved in the defense held on __/ __/_____ by the committee member(s) (mention full name of each member) unable to sign the document."

NOTE: This declaration must be attached to the final printed and/or digital version of the Dissertation or Thesis!

 

EXTENSION FOR DEFENSE OF DISSERTATION/THESIS:

According to General Regulations of Graduate Studies – Stricto Sensu:

Art. 3 - The Master's program has a minimum duration of 12 months and a maximum of 24 months, and the Doctorate has a minimum duration of 24 months and a maximum of 48 months from the date of admission to the Program.

  • § 1- The graduate student may request an extension of up to 6 months from the Program Coordinating Committee (PCC). If approved by the PCC, the extension must be reported to the Graduate Research and Graduate Studies Office (PROPPG) and the Academic Office (SECACAD).
  • § 2- – In exceptional cases, the graduate student may request an additional extension of up to 6 months (second extension). To do so, they must submit the extension request to the Program Coordinating Committee at least 3 months before the deadline, accompanied by the following documents: justification for the request, advisor’s opinion, activity report with respective timeline, and a preliminary version of the dissertation or thesis. The student must have fulfilled all program requirements except the defense. Failure to provide any of these documents will prevent the request from being considered by the Coordinating Committee. Upon approval, the Coordinating Committee will forward the request to the Graduate Studies and Research Committee (CPPG) for evaluation.
  • § 3- For the maximum duration calculation, periods of absence from the University are included, except for leaves due to health issues and maternity leave.
  • § 4- Extensions will only be granted to graduate students with no record of course failure in the Program.
